The vfx department are heroes on a stop motion production! Before the pretty artistic stuff, they have to meticulously clean up whatever happened during the shot - rigging, holes, chatter, tools left out, etc. And some animators can be pretty sloppy with that stuff 😬

Yeah I saw the VFX in the credits and my mind was blown cause I have no doubt they polished this movie to the highest degree on top of the stop motion, it looks SO GOOD. Every movement and detail looks STUNNING.

One of my coworkers was a CG character rigging artist on Wildwood during its production. There is so much skill and passion that goes into the digital elements of Laika films, both to support the fabrication of physical puppet expressions & to ensure where hybrid approaches directly use digital elements, that audiences don’t feel like anything is out of place in the world they’ve built.

VFX/CG artists are often overlooked and not treated as artists and a big reason is because the industry doesn't want them to unionize like every other department in film. They are artists too, just using a different medium, and as much as I love the hand drawn and raw stop motion stuff, they deserve just as much credit as both those art forms.

I wonder how much the flocks of birds included digital effects, especially in the third act. can't wait to get more behind the scenes content for this film

it's no secret that many of the background characters are CG. it takes 9+ months to make a puppet (and they make multiple versions of every puppet) so there is not enough time to make every single character on screen, be a physical puppet. but it is still art and artistry going into all of it!

yes, thank you!! people feeling frustrated w laika for including CG with the stop motion is so crazy. liiiiike, it’s still art and effort put in by humans???? CG & SFX teams are still artists
