In my country, you can choose to use your husband’s surname, or both your own surname and your husband’s surname together.

My friend (male) married a Japanese woman and they live in Japan. For simplicity’s sake he took his wife’s last name. He is aiming to get citizenship just been taking time. He speaks fluent Japanese so he also gets a giggle when he gives his name and when he meets people in person and a 6ft blond hair blue eyed white man is there.

In Spain both spouses keep their last name, in fact, spanish have two last names: one from each parent.
Until a few years ago it was mandatory to have your father's first last name as your first last name and yours mother's first last name as your second. Now parents can choose which one goes first, but that choice must be for all of your children.

I didn’t take my husbands name because it’s sooo annoying. I have to go to the embassy to change it, get a new passport, go to immigration, get a new zairyu, go to city hall and update them, go to the bank and update them, and where ever else I have accounts in my name. I’m planning on setting up an alias at my local city hall as it’s more simple and doesn’t involve nearly as much hassle and red tape.

My husband is Japanese and we both kept our own last names. We both feel that the custom of changing your last name is old fashioned and comes from sexist views on women just becoming part of the man's family. My name has been my name my whole life, I don't see why I should change it. My parents also kept their own names and it did not make us less of a family.

Taking your husband’s name is soooo old dated and is actually based from sexism. You’re not you’re partner’s “property”. They should just stop making this rule.

In South Africa I practice Islam. And in our religion woman should never give up there lineage. So we keep our last name. And South Africa respects all religions and cultures

By Italian law I cannot change my surname. I’m happy about it. Actually I put my surname outside of our house as well, with my husband surname.

My in-laws were talking to me about this and they don’t know how it would work if we register our marriage in Japan. I’m half Japanese, and not a Japanese citizen anymore. My last name isn’t Japanese, so I’m guessing according to the Japanese government I’m not Japanese and wouldn’t have to follow those rules. But my in-laws think that we would actually have to create a new family name/line for the government records. Is that because I used to be a citizen when I was a child? Just confusing.

Welcome to my Japan 🇯🇵 安武😘 :
I was in my husbands koseki and still have my old one. I was difficult but not impossible. I changed my name in Germany since Japan wouldn’t allow it… went back and they had to change it based on my passport.
