get someone to do blind hides for you! I see a lot of people run into issues of people not thinking they are cuing their dog with their body in some way that the scent is nearby

for building a longer alert duration i use this tube i 3d printed (you can make similar with plumber pipes) and basically the scent tin is at the bottom he sticks his nose in and the longer he keeps it there the more food/treats he gets. So it teaches keep nose on scent get more rewards then eventually you make him hold longer and longer with more jackpots.

My 16 m/o Lab just had his first Obedience trial and despite my preparation (Or what I thought was good preparation) for the trial we NQ'd because he was ultra distracted by the environment and decided that laying down was a nice idea right in the middle of his sit stay 😅 I definitely learned that it takes him A LOT of me tal energy to ignore dogs that don't care about him and none to ignore dogs that are barking and lunging 😅 He was so mentally exhausted from keeping impulse control around dogs that genuinely didn't care about him, but now I know to crate him even longer before his ring time and to exercise him well! (and to train around well-behaved dogs apparently 😅) Best of luck on your trial! I'm sure you guys will do great!

he looks good just need to build his hunt drive some more. what do you use as a reward? Reward timing will help. Soon as he hits the odor & you see that he clearly indicated on it reward him quickly. you can stretch it out the better he becomes obedient to odor but when you do that it ups his confidence & he’d be more confident in his responses. Also you can assist him first. I usually do it on imprinting boxes but I do 3 assist & 3 unassisted & that helps build the confidence as well.

This is my Rory!! We went to our first barn hunt last weekend, and he got 4th place in novice against 14 other dogs! He is 6mo and the only puppy there. I’m so proud!!

Did you teach him to find food / treats first? My dog loves her find it game where I’ll hide food and she has to find it, but since I trained the game with food idk how easy it’d be to switch to this instead of food, but I think this would be a bit more enriching than the food
