Compare 2021 to now and you’re not just seeing more arm speed. You’re seeing a different way of moving. Shoulders are tricky. Most guys don’t get back to 98-99. Ashby was sitting 93.9, topping 96.7 before August last year. Now he’s sitting 97-99, touching 99.5 in October, averaging 97.7 on the sinker with 11.7” of ride and -16.2” of run. What’s different: His lower half is actually accepting force now. 2021: He was 1st percentile in extension at 5.89 ft. Had the stuff but was fighting himself to get down the mound. 2026: He’s at 5.59 ft but with a much more stable front leg. That front leg isn’t just bracing. It’s giving him a platform to redirect. His sinker got better because his delivery got more organized. More vertical with the IVB (9.2” to 11.7”), more depth with the horizontal (-14.1” to -16.2”), and he’s doing it from a more efficient VAA window (-5.95° to -6.59°). That’s not a grip tweak. That’s sequencing. 20.1 IP / 5 H / 3 BB / 23 K / 0.00 ERA this October. He didn’t allow a baserunner last night. 2.1 IP, 3 K, 31 pitches. Adding velocity after a major shoulder surgery isn’t about chasing a number. It’s about rebuilding the qualities that let you express force at high speeds again: strength, mobility, lead-leg stability, and the ability to keep the arm in a good position to throw hard for a long time.
