Not everyone who makes you feel good is necessarily a good friend. Some people will agree with everything you say. They'll laugh along when you're doing something you shouldn't be doing. They'll watch you make decisions that are clearly harmful to you. And even when they know you're heading in the wrong direction, they won't say anything because they don't want to make things uncomfortable. And whilst that might feel like friendship, I think we need to ask ourselves whether someone who genuinely cares about us should always be willing to remain silent. Because sometimes the people who care about you the most are the ones who are prepared to have conversations you'd rather avoid. But there's a difference between someone correcting you because they want to embarrass you and someone advising you because they genuinely want what's best for you. Of course, sincere advice should still be given with wisdom, kindness and respect. Caring about someone doesn't give you permission to humiliate them. But we also have to be mature enough to recognise that not every uncomfortable conversation is an attack on us. Sometimes it's exactly what we needed to hear.
