Who owns the rights to the Single Ladies dance? The answer may surprise you. Choreographer JaQuel Knight, who co-created Beyoncé's iconic Single Ladies choreography, obtained a U.S. copyright registration for the dance. A lot of people don't realize that choreography can be protected by copyright. The law doesn't just protect music, films, and books. It can also protect original dance routines. That doesn't mean every dance video is automatically infringing. But when choreography is used commercially, whether in advertising, brand campaigns, or other promotional content, copyright issues become much more likely. To me, the bigger story is what this means for creators. For years, choreographers have watched their work go viral while others built audiences, brands, and sometimes businesses around it. As the creator economy grows, don't be surprised if choreography becomes a major frontier in intellectual property. If you've created original choreography that's becoming part of your brand, protecting it may be worth thinking about. #CopyrightLaw #Choreography #Beyoncé #CreatorEconomy #LawyersForInnovators
