In May 2011, Sol Líneas Aéreas Flight 5428 (a Saab 340 turboprop) was operating a domestic flight through the freezing, remote skies of Patagonia, Argentina. As the aircraft cruised through the pitch-black night, it flew directly into a localized storm system causing severe, rapid airframe icing. While the pilots physically saw the ice building up on the windshield and wings, a fatal lack of situational awareness and poor training left them completely unaware of how aggressively the ice was destroying the plane's aerodynamics. The heavy, jagged accumulation acted like an anchor, rapidly bleeding off the aircraft's airspeed. When the plane's automated stall stick-shaker violently activated, the bewildered crew made a textbook fatal error.
