Arrested in 2022, charges dismissed in 2023, charged again in 2026 — Quantae Jackson was found dead just one week after prosecutors reopened the murder case. HUNTINGTON, IN — A four-year-old Fort Wayne homicide investigation took another tragic turn Wednesday morning when a man accused of murder was found dead inside the Huntington County Jail. Quantae A. Jackson, 32, of Fort Wayne, was discovered during routine jail rounds on October 28, 2026. The Huntington County Coroner's Office confirmed Jackson's death. The Indiana State Police and Coroner's Office are continuing their investigation into the circumstances. 🔴 IT STARTED ON THE FOURTH OF JULY IN 2022 On July 4, 2022, shortly before 9 p.m., Fort Wayne police responded to a shooting inside a home in the 4700 block of South Calhoun Street. Officers discovered two men suffering from gunshot wounds. Calvin Jamere Keys, 27, was pronounced dead at the scene. A second man was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. More than two months later, on September 8, 2022, Jackson was arrested in Indianapolis following a coordinated effort between Fort Wayne police and Indiana State Police. He was transported back to Fort Wayne to face murder and attempted murder charges. ⚖️ THE CASE WAS DISMISSED — THEN BROUGHT BACK The original prosecution was dismissed in 2023. But the case was far from forgotten. On October 21, 2026, the Allen County Prosecutor's Office filed new charges against Jackson stemming from the same 2022 shooting. Those charges included: • Murder • Attempted murder, a Level 1 felony Jackson was presumed innocent of those charges, and no trial or conviction occurred in the newly filed case. 📋 COURT RECORDS SHOW ACTIVITY THE DAY BEFORE HIS DEATH Huntington Indiana Citizen News (HICN) reviewed publicly available court records in Allen Superior Court case 02D06-2610-MR-000018. The records show: • October 21: Murder and attempted murder charges filed. A federal transport request was submitted. • October 22: Judge David M. Zent entered a transport order. • October 26: Prosecutors submitted another federal transport request. • October 27: A second transport order was approved and forwarded to the Allen County Jail. • October 28: Jackson was found dead inside the Huntington County Jail. His October 30 initial hearing was canceled. The records do not establish when Jackson entered the Huntington County Jail or why he was being held there. WHY WAS AN ALLEN COUNTY MURDER SUSPECT IN THE HUNTINGTON COUNTY JAIL? That is one of the biggest unanswered questions surrounding Wednesday's death Jackson was facing charges in Allen County yet he died while being held in Huntington County. The court docket references federal transport requests but those entries do not explain his placement at the Huntington County Jail. There are several questions authorities have yet to publicly answer • When was Jackson booked into the Huntington County Jail? • Was he being held for Allen County, federal authorities, or another agency? • Why was he housed in Huntington rather than Allen County? • When was his last documented welfare check? • What did investigators find when reviewing jail records and available surveillance footage? These are questions not allegations of wrongdoing 🚔 STATE POLICE INVESTIGATION CONTINUES The Indiana State Police and Huntington County Coroner's Office are investigating the circumstances of Jackson's death Huntington Fire Department, Parkview Huntington Hospital EMS, and Huntington Central Dispatch also assisted. The coroner's office extended condolences to Jackson's family and friends. For the family of Calvin Keys, Jackson's death also means the renewed murder prosecution will not proceed to trial against him. HICN will continue seeking answers about Jackson's custody the circumstances surrounding his death and the findings of the ongoing investigation.
