They set clear expectations. Their employees know what good work looks like and what is expected of them. They recognize good work. Employees know their effort will be noticed and appreciated. They correct mistakes without humiliating people. They address poor performance while giving employees a fair chance to improve. They trust their employees. They give people room to do their jobs instead of micromanaging every decision. They hold people accountable. Being understanding does not mean accepting the same mistakes forever. They take responsibility. They do not throw employees under the bus to protect their own reputation. They lead by example. They hold themselves to the same standards they expect from everyone else. They treat people fairly. Employees know that expectations and consequences will not change based on the boss's mood. They give people a reason to take pride in their work.
