I was an ignorant 21 year old when I worked at a movie theater and they had me working Thanksgiving. I told them “why? It’s Thanksgiving. No one will come.” BOY WAS I WRONG. We was so busy, it was insane. I learned really quick how busy retail and entertainment places get on holidays.

The Cafe i worked at averaged about 1000 customers monthly, except in December where it jumped closer to 500k. This is not a joke. We shut down lanes of traffic on a highway.

And seasonal hiring is a nightmare because you HAVE to start in September and they think they automatically are gonna get the hours that they’re gonna work in November and December. Then they don’t and they quit after 2 weeks and it’s back to square one 😭😭😭

not only is it busier we have extended hours, more shipment coming in and the floorset changes more often and you can't just give your regular staff more hours cause on black Friday I'm gonna need more than double that to make it through the day

Most stores also give payroll based on previous year expectations. Which means over staffing during an insane time of inflation driving shoppers to spend less.

My stores sales goal for Black Friday alone is $21,000 when our regular sales goals are $3k-$4k, the holiday season is our busiest season. Not to mentioned the amount of shipment we’ve been getting has doubled so we need people to process it and put it on the sales floor.

I have to hire 15 people to work for Black Friday! One day!! Just one day! Almost impossible to find people to work one day minimum wage, my regular staff is lucky to if they get 5 hours a week during slow period and during the holidays there’s not enough of us to work. A lot of people just don’t get retail at all

I work in a grocery store bakery. I will legitimately schedule every single person on my team the Tuesday before thanksgiving. Every single one. And we still may not have enough hands. Holidays are madness.

They only give us so much payroll and they give our bosses bonuses when they cut that payroll and keep it under certain number. So we’re already short staffed then our hours get cut and we have to work around losing coverage

Have people never seen how many people go into retail spots during the holidays? It is insane, it would be nice to not have seasonal workers but seasonal work can turn into part time employeement, but like holidays get worse.

and this is why I will stand and die on this hill: no matter what profession you are going into...everyone needs to have had work in retail for at least 2 years maybe 3 and work every position in a store. the way people have no clue what really goes on blows my mind

I worked at a company whose busiest season was the holidays and they kinda did that because we struggled to keep the seasonal hires. We barely had enough hours most of the year for 3 people on staff. 2 of thise people had been there 1 or more decades and we're already receiving the amount of hours they wanted, which meant a lot of those extra hours fell on me and I did not want to go from 10 hours a week to 40 as someone with chronic illness. especially since the customers we got during the holidays also tended to be extra awful to us.

Amazon hires like 700-1000new people between the months of August and November per warehouse then all of their employees are mandated to work 55 hours a week ( vacation blackout from Black Friday to Christmas Eve)
