Tonight, I joined members of our Oshkosh community at a vigil for Wendy Mendez and her family. Wendy is one of our neighbors. She’s an educator who was recognized as an OASD Employee of the Year just last year. She’s a wife and a mother of two boys, one of whom has Down syndrome. Her family came to Wisconsin in part because of the educational opportunities and support available for their youngest son. They were building a life here. Oshkosh was their home. And now Wendy has been deported, torn away from her husband and children by the very government she was working with to build a permanent future here. What happened to this family is cruel, and it should never have happened. It’s difficult to understand what we’ve accomplished by taking a mother away from her children and removing a valued educator from our community. Who exactly is our government protecting? Who was in danger here? ICE’s operations destabilize communities. This is what that looks like in practice. It’s not some abstract debate happening in Washington. It’s happening right here in Oshkosh, to good people who live alongside us. People with families, careers, hopes, and plans for their futures. Our neighbors. And when we lose sight of that humanity, something has gone terribly wrong. Wendy’s family deserves answers, a meaningful review of her case, and every opportunity to be reunited. Our federal representatives should be doing everything in their power to help make that happen. Please vote on Tuesday, Nov. 3.#Oshkosh
