For a month, attorney Taradath Singh lived with the fear that someone wanted him dead. After surviving a shooting at his Cunupia home in September, when three bullets struck his vehicle, Singh turned to prayer, hoping those responsible would abandon their plans to harm him. “I am alive by the grace of God,” Singh said during a call-in television programme after the first attack. He did not disclose a motive for the shooting, but pleaded with whoever was targeting him to stop. “The person who sought to end my life, This is a plea from a simple person. I am asking them to don’t. I am asking them to don’t,” he said. On Tuesday evening, Singh, a former police officer and criminal defence attorney, was shot dead outside a gym in Charlieville, one month after surviving that first attack. The 53-year-old was leaving Power House Gym at the corner of Caroni Savannah Road and ASJA Avenue around 6.25 pm when a masked gunman dressed in blue coveralls approached and opened fire. Singh reportedly tried to run when he saw the gunman approaching, but was shot twice in the chest. He fell near the entrance to ASJA Boys’ College and died. The earlier attack occurred as Singh reversed his vehicle into the driveway of his Penn Trace, Cunupia, home. Three bullets struck the vehicle, including the bonnet and the windscreen on the driver’s side. He survived that shooting, but the motive remained undetermined. When contacted by the Express last month, Singh declined to discuss the incident. Tuesday’s killing was witnessed by several people, including an off-duty police officer, who contacted the Central Division. However, Singh had died by the time officers arrived. The Assembly of Southern Lawyers yesterday condemned the killing and called on the Commissioner of Police to ensure a prompt, thorough and impartial investigation. The association said attorneys must be able to carry out their professional responsibilities without fear of violence or intimidation. “Without prejudging the motive for this killing, the concern it has generated within the legal profession must be taken seriously,” the statement said. It called for the authorities to commit the necessary resources to identify those responsible and bring them to justice. “Mr Singh’s life mattered. His family deserves justice, and this crime demands an urgent and resolute response,” the association said
