**Update: in 2020 when Navajo Nation was hit hard by COVID & had one of the highest infection rates in the country, Ireland sent hundreds of thousands of dollars. It wasn’t random: Ireland never forgot that $170.

It’s kinda cool that the appalachians(where the Choctaw are from) and the mountains in Scotland and Ireland are from the same ancient mountain range. It’s like we’re spiritual siblings

My many greats grandmother walked the Trail of Tears when she was 8. She was 17 when our tribe (Cherokee) met at Fort Gibson to discuss how to help the Irish experiencing famine in 1847. I think our tribe sent around $100? Now, many years later, she has a granddaughter who was born from a Cherokee dad and an Irish mom. 💚🧡

But let’s not forget to mention they didn’t have a true famine (like sick crops) it was Britain TAKING EVERYTHING while the Irish did the work of growing the food

In every history book in every school in Ireland, in the chapters about An gorta mór (The great hunger/Irish famine) there is a section about the generosity of the Chocktaw people and the significance of the trail of tears and why those $170 meant so much, because the people who had the least, gave absolutely everything they could. We are determined to never forget their generosity. There is a monument in Cork called “Kindred Spirits” which is a metal sculpture of feathers arranged in the shape of a bowl to commemorate the generosity of the Chocktaw in how they scraped together every dollar they had to purchase food aid for the Irish. There is a sister-sculpture on Chocktaw land called the “Eternal Heart” which is of a Celtic knot intertwined with a heart shape to symbolise the now eternal connection between the Chocktaw and the Irish people.

As an Irish person, I feel extremely protective of the indigenous. Because of them so many Irish descendants are alive today because the indigenous showed up for our ancestors. I’m proud that Ireland continues to grow the relationship with the indigenous. May we both continue to prosper.

My favourite parts of indigenous history is the way that indigenous groups *always* gave everything they had to other victims of colonization 💜

in 2022 when the Iroquois nation was being excluded from the lacrosse world games they were only allowed to compete if another team dropped out despite being the creators of the sport. the Irish team immediately withdrew so the Iroquois could compete.

As a Native American, it baffles me that so many people think the land back movement is about displacing anyone. Because we have been displaced and know what that does to a people, why would we want that to happen to anyone else? Natives are the kindest most loving people. All we have ever wanted is justice for the Earth that includes everyone on earth, all living things 😭
