A mudang 무당 is a shaman-priest of Corean indigenous religion or mugyo 무교 and has undergone an initiation 신내림 into a lineage. This is a closed practice, which means that one must be invited into the journey of becoming a mudang. Each lineage provides their own practices and methodologies of working with deities, spirits, ghosts, and people. Shaman/shamanism is not a totally accurate term, but it does describe the grouping of indigenous religions throughout the world which are polytheistic and animist in nature. Normal people can also practice mugyo and provided offerings and prayers to deities, but of course the practices look very different from an initiated mudang. This is how normal Koreans honored their deities and ancestors in the past from their homes, villages, and shrines. There are quite a few mugyo practices still observed today such as the two largest holidays Mid-autumn Festival (chuseok 추석/hangawi 한가위) and Lunar New Year (seollal 설날) and a child's 100th day (doljabi 돌잡이). Moreover, a person can be a practitioner or Corean indigenous folk magic/religion/healer and are called jusulsa 주술사, but are not the same as someone who is an initiated mudang.
