Two helicopters collided in midair near McMinnville Municipal Airport in Oregon on Thursday afternoon, killing all three people aboard. Yamhill County Sheriff Sam Elliott said the aircraft came down on privately owned farmland near Lafayette Highway and Southeast Stringtown Road. At an evening briefing, the sheriff identified the two occupants of the Robinson R22 as Maddie Aasbo, a 22-year-old flight instructor from Texas, and a student pilot from the United Kingdom. The sole occupant of the Airbus helicopter was identified as Tyler Delane Sturdevant, 38, of Newberg, Oregon. Authorities withheld the British student’s name while notifying family members. A witness told a local television station that he was standing on the roof of a nearby barn when he saw the helicopters collide and fall to the ground, prompting him to call 911. Nearby roads were closed, and authorities asked the public to avoid the area while emergency responders and investigators worked. The National Transportation Safety Board will lead the investigation, with the Federal Aviation Administration participating. No cause has been announced. Pilot error, training procedures, mechanical problems or air traffic control should not be presented as established explanations.
