@thesportsontap: In 1998 the University of Hawaii football team lost every game it played. All twelve of them. The next season that same school went 9 and 4. The man who did that was June Jones, and we lost him today. He was 73. That 1999 turnaround was the most dramatic in the history of college football. It stood for more than 20 years before Tulane finally beat it. He learned an offense called the run and shoot from a coach named Mouse Davis at Portland State. Nobody drafted him. He played five years for the Atlanta Falcons anyway. From 1999 to 2007 he went 76 and 41 at Hawaii, with an offense that barely ran the ball and a team that never held a full contact practice. In his last season the Warriors went 12 and 0 in the regular season, got ranked 10th in the country, and played their way into the Sugar Bowl. A school 2,500 miles from the mainland, in a BCS bowl game. Here is the quarterback who did it with him. Colt Brennan was not supposed to be there either. He had been thrown out of Colorado. A Hawaii assistant named Rich Miano only found him because he was watching film of a receiver at Saddleback College and noticed the kid throwing the passes. Jones offered him a walk-on spot and told him to come prove it. Brennan threw 131 touchdown passes at Hawaii and finished third in the Heisman voting in 2007. We lost Colt Brennan in May of 2021. He was 37 years old. Here is what Jones said after. "That person has to want to help themselves or you're never going to beat it." Be straight about the rest of his record. He was 19 and 29 as head coach of the Falcons, and 36 and 43 at SMU, and he walked away in the middle of the 2014 season citing personal issues. But go back to the first thing. He took a team that had lost twelve games in a row and made it a winner in one year. Then he took a kid nobody else wanted and made him the third best player in college football. #cfb #CollegeFootball #cfbnews #hawaii #hawaiifootball

I was a maintenance worker at a private golf country club here in Honolulu, June Jones invited me to have breakfast with him. He was a true gentleman who does not care who you are. He respected everyone.
