President Marcos says Filipinos should not panic as the peso continues its historic slide. But the October 27 closing rate of ₱64.17 to $1 matters beyond trading screens. In 2024, the peso averaged around ₱57.29 per dollar. At that rate, $100 cost about ₱5,729. At the October 27 rate, it worked out to ₱6,417. That is almost ₱700 more for the same amount of dollars. A weaker peso can raise the peso cost of dollar-priced imports. These include fuel, machinery, raw materials and other goods. Businesses may absorb some costs, but some can eventually reach consumers. The Philippines still has significant foreign reserves. Global oil prices and dollar strength are also part of the story. So panic? No. But Filipinos have good reason to pay attention.
