ADHD and Autism Masking: When You Think You’re Fitting In I genuinely think I’m quite good at masking my ADHD and autism sometimes. I’ll walk into a room full of people, convince myself I’m acting completely normal, and then spend the next hour behaving like a bloody alien who’s been given five minutes to learn how humans socialise. In my head, I’m absolutely nailing it. In reality, I’ve probably made too much eye contact, avoided eye contact altogether, laughed at something that wasn’t funny, interrupted someone halfway through a sentence and started explaining a subject nobody actually asked me about. Then there’s the overthinking. Am I standing normally? What am I supposed to do with my hands? Have I been talking too much? Why has that person gone quiet? Was that a joke? Am I supposed to laugh? And somehow, while all this is happening, I’m still trying to listen to the actual conversation. That’s the funny thing about neurodivergent masking. We can put so much effort into appearing comfortable and fitting in that we don’t always realise how exhausting the whole performance has become. For some autistic people and people with ADHD, masking involves consciously monitoring facial expressions, body language, conversations and reactions. Things that might happen naturally for someone else can feel like a constant mental calculation. And sometimes we’re so focused on getting everything right that we end up looking even more awkward. The worst part is getting home afterwards and replaying every conversation, wondering whether anyone noticed how uncomfortable we actually felt. I can laugh about it now, but there’s also something quite sad about spending so much energy trying to appear like everyone else. Does anyone else think they’re brilliant at masking, only to realise they’re probably the most obviously neurodivergent person in the room? What’s the one thing you do in social situations that you think gives you away? #AuDHDMasking #AutisticMasking #ADHDSocialStruggles #creatorsearchinsights
