My coach, I’ve come to realise that it is sometimes better to spread your investment across different stocks gradually rather than wait until you have a lump sum to invest. One challenge with adding to existing holdings is that the share price may have increased significantly by the time you are ready to buy more.
For example, I bought Dangote Cement at ₦1,010 last week, but by yesterday, 29th October, the price had risen to ₦1,420. This shows how quickly a stock can appreciate, making it more expensive to accumulate additional shares.
That is one of the challenges of adding to existing positions. Sometimes, exploring new stocks with strong fundamentals and reasonable valuations may present better opportunities than adding to stocks that have already rallied significantly.
Also, dividends are not guaranteed, so investors should not focus solely on dividend income. Capital appreciation is another important consideration when building a portfolio.
Ultimately, I believe the key is to identify fundamentally strong stocks, buy at reasonable prices, and invest consistently while remaining mindful of valuation and risk.
