@herbswithjen: God put one of the greatest gifts for the liver inside a thistle seed. Milk thistle, Silybum marianum, is a liver trophorestorative. It feeds and rebuilds the liver over time. WHAT IT DOES It helps liver cells make new protein and repair, strengthens each cell wall against toxins, and protects glutathione, the liver’s master antioxidant. Cirrhosis: four-year survival was 58% on silymarin and 39% on placebo. Tuberculosis drugs: liver injury hit 32% on placebo and under 4% on silymarin. Fatty liver: across 26 trials, it lowered liver enzymes, cholesterol and liver fat. BEST WAY TO USE IT (My Amazon storefront) Silymarin barely dissolves in water, so for the liver, use the seed, a capsule or a tincture. Capsules: 140 mg silymarin 3 times a day (trial). 200 to 400 mg silymarin a day (official, Commission E). Ground seed: grind fresh and sprinkle on food. 12 to 15 grams of seed a day (official, Commission E), about 1 1/2 to 2 Tbsp ground (practical estimate, weigh it if you can). Tea for digestion and fullness: 3 to 5 grams crushed seed, about 1 to 1 1/2 tsp, in 100 mL, a scant 1/2 cup, of boiling water, 2 to 3 times a day. Take it before meals (official, EMA). This is slow medicine, so stay with it for months. Pair it with a healthy diet, plenty of water and regular exercise. PRECAUTIONS Official cautions: do not use if you are allergic to ragweed, daisies or that plant family. Pregnant or nursing talk with your midwife or OB. If your skin or eyes turn yellow, or your urine or stool changes color, see a doctor right away. Mild stomach upset can happen. It may lower blood sugar, so talk with your doctor if you take diabetes medicine. “He causeth the grass to grow for the cattle, and herb for the service of man.” Psalm 104:14 Save this one. For the dressing of carnal wounds, the synthetic compound mixtures given are replicated forms of what nature gives. Seeking the source of what has been replicated in labs may give us proof of the greater healing abilities of herbs and trees.
