@cspanofficial: C-SPAN's "America's Book Club" — Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Annette Gordon-Reed and presidential historian and bestselling author Douglas Brinkley discuss what they consider the most important event of the 21st century. "First thing I thought of when you asked that — I just saw visions of 9/11," Mr. Brinkley said. "This made the 21st century a kind of a hyper security, kind of fear that's crept into society." "The election of Donald Trump," Ms. Gordon-Reed said. "It had a huge impact on the country, so that's what people will look back to in the 21st century." Watch the full interview SUNDAY at 6pm and 9pm ET/PT on C-SPAN. #cspan #cspanabc #books #21stcentury
The most damaging event, and I believe historians will say the most significant event, is the rapid rise of authoritarianism in the US.

If you'd adked this 100 years ago, people would have said WWI, the invention of modern fertilizer, or the flu pandemic. There were even more big things to come down the line--WWII, electrification, nuclear weapons, birth control, civil rights, antibiotics, and many more. We're barely 1/4th of the way through this century. There are much bigger things coming that we have now way to predict.
