i think you’ve misunderstood the meaning of “my money is my money and your money is our money.” it was never about giving men control over our finances, but rather about balancing the unequal burdens women disproportionately carry. expecting men to contribute more financially isn’t the same as surrendering our financial autonomy. it’s about recognising that equality doesn’t always mean a 50/50 split when the burdens themselves aren’t equally shared.

A true partnership is you spend money on me and I spend money on you and we’re hitting our financial goals together and are happy

Letting the man just decide all the investments might sound easy but then the dynamic becomes the man handles money like an adult and you just get an allowance for fun purchases like a child even when you have a grown woman job

I agree with this so hard. I hate the ‘make him pay for everything mentality’ especially when it’s got minor things like well go for froyo and the lady behind the counter was like ‘let him pay’. Ma’am I have been with this man for 10 years and we live together atp it doesn’t matter who pays for froyo 😂😂😂. Also hard agree on the outsourcing financial decisions to men e.g. if he’s the only one paying rent he’s deciding where you live etc

I don’t think it’s setting anyone back because the point is to be earning your own.

these topics always need more nuance/context and i find the internet is a hard place to navigate it without it because half these comments are talking about different things

Don’t let them gaslight you in the comments. Lots of women are stuck with a mindset of benevolent patriarchy. This way of thinking not only stop us from fighting for unbiased hiring of women but also tightening the wealth gap between men and women if we still except men to be providers.

It also feels like it reduces the mans role in a relationship to be purely financial, we should be encouraging women to find men who can contribute to the household in more ways than just money! Life is so much better if you are financially literate with a man who will take care of the home with you and not just the bills!!

That doesnt even make sense to me especially if you live under the same roof or plan to marry. Doesnt matter who buys things, Itd affect both of them.

Where did having a separate bank account stash for yourself turned into him having financial control? What? Nah, both the spouses sit together and discuss where and how to sort the money “he” earned. Thats how Chinese culture works. Maybe some other cultures turn it into financial control for the men but that’s not the case everywhere.

I think they expect the man to pay because they are bearing kids and a lot of effort and labour goes into that. But if the man is okay with not having kids then an equal partnership is okay.Because when kids are involved it can never be equal

Does anyone else feel like 50/50 relationships feel like you’re still losing out? It makes me feel like I’m giving more but I can’t put my finger on it

men SHOULD be the providers (ie pay for housing, food, etc.) and if the woman works she should also know how to save, invest, and manage money. traditional gender roles still exist to an extent, i fear woman r the ones to take care of/oversee more of the housework. sooo if a man can provide and a woman can care for the home then it’s balanced :) but she still knows how to be financially responsible!! so yes, his money is our money, and mine is my own 😌

It’s about establishing equity girly not equality. We spend so much on beauty treatments, makeup, clothes, not to mention the time and energy it takes

ILY girl but I think this idea works great if you don’t have kids / don’t plan to either, BUT girl…the minute you do (from pregnancy to postpartum) lemme tell you everything changes. Not saying you shouldn’t know how to invest / manage it (you absolutely should) but when you’re so exhausted in the thick of postpartum just trying to keep yourself and baby alive bc no matter how much you’d want your husband to be around (paternity leave doesn’t allow for it anyway) you’ll change how you look at being taken care of, and not ‘managing’ money but ofc being completely transparent w it is a form of care on its own. Biology unfortunately is just not on our side as women.

women making their own $ arent just twiddling their thumbs not being financially savvy. in the same way a man paying for his partner does not automatically make him a finance guru.
