@crimetalkwithscottreisch: POLICE SAY THIS COP LOST HIS DRUG EVIDENCE, SO HE TOOK A STRANGER'S METH TO REPLACE IT. HIS COP FIANCEE ALLEGEDLY HELPED Scott's take: In 31 years I've heard plenty of "the evidence got misplaced," but allegedly swapping in a different stranger's meth is a new one. Every defense lawyer in Santa Clara County is about to pull this officer's old cases, and they should. A San Jose police officer is charged with evidence tampering after investigators say he lost the drugs from a street arrest, then covered it up by taking drugs from a different person and booking them in as the original evidence. Raydarius Surry, 29, who joined the San Jose Police Department in 2019, was arrested Wednesday on felony counts of altering, planting or manufacturing evidence as a peace officer and filing a false police report. His fiancee, 30-year-old Officer Destiney Thompson, who has been with the department since 2021, was arrested and charged with the same crimes. Both live in Gilroy, were released on $100,000 bail, and have been on paid administrative leave since September. According to an internal investigation, Surry arrested a man on May 3 on suspicion of possessing crystal meth. In August, when the drugs were due at the county crime lab, the department told him the baggie he had photographed after the arrest was not in evidence storage. On Aug. 13, Surry booked a baggie into evidence under the May case number and reported that he had found it hidden in the man's shoe, the criminal complaint alleges. Investigators say that one day earlier, Surry stopped a pedestrian near St. James Park and confiscated a baggie of suspected meth without making an arrest or writing a citation. They determined that was the baggie he booked for the May case. Investigators also suspect Thompson helped by watching his body-camera video from the May stop to figure out what kind of baggie they needed. The department has asked the state to consider suspending both officers' police certifications while the case is pending. All persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. #CrimeTalk #TrueCrime #SanJose #California #PoliceMisconduct #EvidenceTampering
