@eastora.news: EASTORA REPORT | Vladimir Putin says Russia does not want a war with Europe. His warning is that Europe should not mistake that for an unwillingness to fight one. Speaking in Moscow on Thursday, the Russian president pointed to repeated warnings from European officials that the continent must be ready for a possible confrontation with Russia by 2030. “We are ready, but we do not want any war with Europe,” Putin said. “If they want to prepare, let them prepare.” He then delivered the sharper part of the message. “If things go too far, there will be no winners at all. Let no one forget that.” Putin tied the warning directly to growing tensions in the Baltic Sea, where NATO exercises, surveillance of Russian shipping and concern over undersea infrastructure have turned the region into one of the most sensitive points between Moscow and Europe. He said Russia did not want the Baltic to become another heavily contested maritime zone, comparing the risk to the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz. “We don’t want that,” Putin said, while adding that Russia would respond to any challenge. The message came as Moscow cautiously reopened direct contact with parts of Europe. Putin recently spoke with Finnish President Alexander Stubb and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, and said Russia supports restoring relations either with individual European states or with the European Union as a whole. That leaves Europe with two messages from Moscow at once: Russia says it is open to rebuilding ties, but also insists it is prepared for a direct confrontation if the continent continues preparing for one. Putin’s preferred outcome is renewed contact. His warning is about what happens if that contact fails.
