@kitznewzroom: 🚨On October 29, 2006, two men were target shooting near an oil field outside Kilgore, Texas, when they came across something horrifying. A young woman's body was lying face down on a burning pile of wood. At first, they thought it might be a mannequin someone had set on fire as a Halloween prank. But it wasn't. It was a young woman who had been brutally murdered. Her remains were so badly burned that investigators couldn't identify her. She was wearing jeans and a lavender-colored sweater, which eventually earned her the name Lavender Doe. She had just $40 in her pocket, no identification, and nobody seemed to be looking for her. For years, investigators had no idea who she was. One unusual clue was that she still had two baby teeth, despite being an adult. Investigators estimated she was between 17 and 25 years old. What investigators didn't know was that her killer had already been questioned in connection with her death. His name was Joseph Wayne Burnette, a convicted sex offender. DNA evidence connected him to the victim, but he wasn't charged at the time. Then, in 2018, another woman named Felisha Pearson was murdered. Burnette became a suspect in that killing, and when detectives questioned him, he confessed to murdering both women. According to investigators, Burnette encountered Lavender Doe in a Walmart parking lot, where she was reportedly selling magazine subscriptions. He persuaded her to get into his vehicle. She never made it out alive. But even after police had her killer, they still didn't know her real name. That changed in 2019, when volunteers with the DNA Doe Project used genetic genealogy to identify her as Dana Lynn Dodd, a 21-year-old woman originally from Jacksonville, Florida. Dana had been traveling with a magazine sales crew. Her family didn't know where she was, and she had never officially been reported missing. For more than 12 years, she had been buried without her name while her family remained unaware of what had happened to her. In December 2020, Burnette pleaded guilty to murdering Dana and Felisha Pearson. He received concurrent 50-year prison sentences, meaning they run at the same time rather than one after another. And here's one of the saddest parts of this story. Dana's family eventually traveled to Texas to hold a memorial for her. Her grave, which had been marked only as Jane Doe, finally received a headstone bearing her real name. #Dna #Lavendardoe #MissingPerson #CrimeNews
