@kistreadsbooks: sometimes I get the "well it's not for you" comment in response to critical book reviews and I'm here to tell ya, trying things that aren't marketed directly to me is kinda my jam #BookTok
The one I hate even more is, “you just didn’t understand it”. I get that all the time when I say I didn’t like Poppy War.

Well said. Did you read the whole poppy war series or just the first one? Merely curious. But thank you for this message; it’s a nice reminder

we contain multitudes. that grimdark horror fantasy AND dirty aah monster romance AND camus AND nonfiction about bears destroying a libertarian village can all form a poly cuddle puddle on my nightstand

If one wishes to create and/or loves art for what it is then one must engage with all of it, because that's life. We can't be the voice of truth if we refuse to engage with it—all of it—simply because it falls outside of that which we have grown accustomed to. Wether it be books, films, music, anything, just engage with it all. You came to know your own preferences by being introduced to things you were a stranger to at first. This is also, going off on a bit of a tangent here, why as we become older we get stuck in our ways so much we get fossilised. Be water, etc.

a small but loud contingent of people quite literally think negative reviews shouldn't be allowed, and the only options should be "I loved it!" or "I didn't love it, but someone else will!"

“You just didn’t understand it,” is lowkey one of the most embarrassing responses to negative criticism because some of the stuff y’all think is profound or obscure like…nope that was obvious to everyone…and still not exciting.

Well as a 23 y/o woman, poppy war was not good and it was the best of the trilogy which I should’ve given up on way earlier

books aren't written "for" certain people. they might resonate differently with different groups, but literature should be about the human experience on some level, and if it's good there should be something appealing in it for everyone

I don’t really know what not for me looks like but I can tell you this neither does Storygraph because it’s so lost with me the reach outside your comfort zone has books by authors I’ve read and books that are on my tbr.

I don’t think it’s a weak shield if it’s marketed to YA. But you do have a right to give criticism on poor writing.

I am not the targeted audience for Lonesome Dove, but my God if it isn't in my top five favorites of all time. I love blind reading and genre jumping. I didn't know I liked fantasy until recently 🤷🏻♀️

Personal reviews are that. Personal. My reviews are of my opinions of the books I read based on my tastes in reading. 🤷🏼♀️

I desperately wanted to love the poppy war. There were parts that were great, but the in betweens were so clunky. It was around a 3 for me.

There is something to both sides. i agree with reading outside your comfort zone.I read a lot if genres. But on the other hand, i made the mistake of picking up Dungeon Crawler Carl. Some people love it, but it's absolutely not for me. Just like The Three Stooges isn't for me. I'm not the audience. Yet I'll read a broad spectrum from Moby Dick to the Sookie Stackhouse books.

it's odd that you get that, cuz I've gotten a ton of recs and books from you and some others that I would have never picked up. *Lonesome Dove and The Spear Cuts Through Water for a couple.
