I'm Finnish and brought up as christian (sort of). But i never truly believed in heaven as told. I have always believed our spirits go to live somewhere other than heaven, they can visit us and we as long as we are remembered we continue living there. Once we are forgotten, we will be born again to this world. It goes without saying my idea was concidered nonsense by others. Learning about dia de muertos made me feel very warm inside, knowing others share parts of my belief. I don't celebrate dia de muertos, nor do i celebrate all saints day as "my" culture says i should. I do not agree with "my" culture, i have my own belief. Non the less, i am sure my ancestors can visit me even on dia de muertos.

To start with saying: you are more than welcome to join my traditions as a sweed. But what you did just explain here is far from what most Mexican feel. Most of them is including and feel exactly like me, enjoy their culture. How do I know that? My in laws and half of my family is from Mexico City. My husband is Mexican.

Sooo you’re saying there’s segregation in the afterlife?? Makes no sense and how are you so sure of it? Nobody really knows what happens after death and I don’t mean near death experiences either.

as someone who married a non Mexican, i disagree with this. my son wants to put his dad's super white grandparents on my ofrenda, im not telling him no. if people i love(who arent mexican) wanna add their dead to my altar I'm not gonna say "no, sorry, your white/black/chinese/etc dead arent gonna come back and be here so it doesn't matter". I'm gonna educate and embrace them.

In Celtic culture, we celebrate Samhain, which is on the 31st of October, and it's is the time when the veil is thin and you can also communicate with your ancestors and passed loved ones

This take is so wack omg 😭 not a segregated afterlife. Coping with grief transcends race. As long as its respectful. Bc mind you yes you could celebrate any of those other events you listed, people do it often.

For sure. I do have a question. Do you think there is segregation of ancestors in the afterlife? How do you know exactly?

I feel like the belief that our ancestors are in different places separates us as people even more. Say if I marry a Chinese person while not being Chinese, when we die we will be separated in death rather than reunited. I like to think that how we celebrate and honor our dead is just the path to the afterlife. There are different paths but they all lead at the same place.

But wait, día de los muertos is not a Mexican only tradition and is ruled in catholic religion. It isn’t an indigenous holiday? It’s catholic hence all of latam celebrates. We also celebrate in Bolivia.

I hear where you're coming from on respecting traditions, but drawing strict rules around who can participate is exclusionary. In a country as multicultural as the US—especially in places like the Southwest that were historically Mexico—our cultures, histories, and families are deeply integrated. Language is culture, so gatekeeping this is like saying people of Mexican descent shouldn't speak Spanish because it originated in Europe. Culture isn't about rigid boundaries; it evolves. Even in community college Spanish classes, educators actively teach Día de los Muertos to help students connect with the culture. As long as people approach sacred traditions with genuine respect, education, and humility, sharing in remembrance brings people together rather than keeping them apart.

This is such an ignorant take. Anyone can celebrate as long as it’s respectful, that’s what the Mexican culture is about, we welcome everyone.

What if you married a Mexican and now your kids are half Mexican and now half your family is Mexican and they all practice it and think I should be able to do it too in order for my children to understand and appreciate that part of their culture just like they’ve learned to practice my holidays as well

Dia de Muertos is tied to indigenous beliefs but because of the Spanish conquest, they decided to blend their Catholicism beliefs with this sacred tradition. The Aztecs had their own beliefs and practices, believing that their ancestors came from the Aztec underworld: Mictlan, Tlalocan, Tonatiuh Ichan, and Chichihuacuauhco. So when Mexicans create an ofrenda, they’re opening a portal to this place so that their ancestors can come visit them. So if a non-Mexican does an ofrenda without understanding the significance or history behind this, do you think their ancestors would know any better? They’re not familiar with these traditions or beliefs, meaning they’re not going to be in Mictlan. Why? Because they never had connections to these beliefs! People will only end up inviting the bad spirits into their own homes. And if they have their own culture and traditions, why not engage in them? Why do they have to call their altar an “ofrenda” if it can be a simple altar. It’s just a lack of understanding and knowledge. This is a sacred tradition that survived through colonization and demonization. And it’s enraging seeing Mexicans AND non-mexicans letting people become part of this sacred tradition only for these people to change the rules because they felt like it. It’s truly sad and ignorant.

[“Gentrification” IS colonization. Just like segregation was slavery under another name. Whoever said “culture is meant to be shared” must not have had one to PROFIT from. Must not have respected any either since they didn’t add “-and respected.”] Something I found interesting is the same people demanding the immigrants to “adapt to the country’s culture” are the ones CHANGING. Halloween is just like Thanksgiving. Nobody cares for either of those two U.S. holidays. They are literally just d3ad holidays at this point, and many christians that call anything and everything that has to do with connecting/contacting the d3ad (whether it’s in someone’s religion or tradition) would surely have branded the Día de los Muertos as "demonic." This is why I consider them a group of hypocrites: they have no issue with connecting or communicating with the d3ad when THEY THEMSELVES are the ones doing it, yet they attack others—for instance, in cases involving witchcraft or the use of a Ouija board—by claiming that such practices go "against their religion."
