@joshallyn: The only known “green” mammal is the sloth, but it’s only green because it’s constantly wet and algae grows all over its brown fur 🦥💚 #green #evolution #learnbiologyontiktok #vision #color
In the words of Neil deGrasse Tyson, "The color we see it as, is actually the only color it's not". 😅😅

I learned about this recently! Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe that the mutation that occurred was on the X chromosome? And that's why color blindness is more common is man , bc they don't have a backup copy of the gene if theirs is wrong. It's all really awesome!

Wild that the tiger's orange only stands out to us because of our extra red cone - to its dichromatic prey it basically blends in with the green.

I still wanna talk about the rainbow mantis shrimp and it's eyeballs with all the cones and rods and colors we don't have

CharlotteQueenOfGnomes :
Common misconception. Mantis shrimp have more types of photo receptors, but they don’t process them the same way we do. Our eyes use three photoreceptors to synthesize an experience of hundreds of colors. Mantis shrimp don’t synthesize color experiences the same way, so they only see one color per receptor for 12-16 colors total (some outside the range of human perception, but overall with less distinction between colors)

Sean Suzio :
From my understanding the shrimp thing is that they don’t have a brain that can blend different colors together so they only have 16 colors available and no gradients

I hate it when you drop a fascinating nerdy rabbit hole for my brain only to leave! (By hate it I mean I love it… but fuck you and thank you… mostly thank you)

The shrimp colors thing is misleaidng. They have more rods but lack the brain structure to combine the colors. They see 16 individual colors wehre we can combine the 3 rods in our eyes to see millions. lol

Just casually mentioning my favorite animal of all time (the mantis shrimp) and NOT going into detail about it despite being one of the most interesting animals I’ve ever read about (they have some of the most complex eye systems that we’ve studied literally ever)

you forgot one more related fun fact: clorophyll likely evolved to be green because chloroplasts receive more energy from sunlight than they can use and have to reflect some back, and green is the highest energy part of our visible sunlight (i might be misremembering some details 😅)

why did I not think about the fact no mammals have naturally occurring green fur - seems like something I would have realized sooner 🫠

Okay but if I eat a plant, now I have chlorophyll in my stomach… why can’t I use that to become green?
