All 38 women are grandmothers, and most are widows. They started wearing red hats and purple sweaters to lunch 11 years ago so they'd have somewhere to be on Tuesdays, and they're loud about it. Wanda, 81, was reading the paper at one of those lunches when she stopped and tapped the page. The last paid worker at the county shelter had taken a job at a warehouse, and there was no money to hire another one. That shelter held 41 dogs, nearly all old, and the volunteers were down to one retired mailman with a bad back. The story didn't say what would happen to the dogs.

"Well," Wanda said, and looked around the table. They went the next morning at seven, carrying mops from their own kitchens. Some of them wore the hats as a joke. The mailman let them in, and the smell about knocked Betty down. Then Arlene, who's 79 and raised six boys, got her bucket filled, and the joke was over by nine. It turned into shifts. Two women came every morning and two at supper, seven days a week, with a chart on the wall that looked like a battle plan. The youngest was 64. Betty can't bend anymore, so she took the office and found $6,000 the place was owed. Women with bad knees did towels, and women with good knees scrubbed the runs and got down on the wet floor with old dogs who'd quit coming to the front of the kennel. Marge spent nine days on the wet floor of one run with a lab mix named Sully, who'd quit getting up. With that gray face in both hands, she talked about her grandchildren the whole time. On the ninth day Sully got up and followed her down the hall to the mop closet. The hats turned out to be good for business. Every Tuesday each woman brought one dog to lunch, out on the cafeteria patio. People came over to ask about the hats and left holding a leash. They ran that shelter for 14 months. By the time the county found the money for a manager, the gates were oiled and the books balanced, and six dogs were left in the building. The new manager is 26. He came in on his first Monday carrying a box of his things and found 38 women lined up in the hall to hand him the keys. Wanda walked him through the chart. Then she told him lunch was at noon on Tuesdays and he was welcome. One red hat still hangs on the hook by the office door. He says it doesn't fit him, and he hasn't moved it.
