@fireplaybook: One of the reasons I like looking beyond the biggest names in the market is that there’s almost always something interesting happening beneath the surface. Through June 30, these seven Fidelity ETFs had posted some pretty remarkable YTD returns — led by Fidelity Disruptive Technology ETF (FDTX) at more than 41%. What caught my attention isn’t just the performance, though. Look at where the strength is coming from: disruptive technology, cloud computing, emerging markets, small caps, information technology, energy and value. That’s a good reminder that the stock market is much bigger than the handful of mega-cap companies we hear about every day. Would I buy an ETF simply because it had a great six months? Absolutely not. Performance chasing is one of the easiest ways to turn a good investment strategy into a bad one. A fund that gained 30% or 40% recently can just as easily go through a long period of underperformance. But I do think lists like this are useful. They show us where momentum has been, introduce us to funds we may not have come across before, and give us a reason to dig deeper. Before buying any ETF, I want to understand what it actually owns, how concentrated it is, what it costs, how volatile it has been, and—most importantly—whether it actually belongs in my long-term portfolio. Past performance is interesting. It just isn’t an investment strategy. Data shown: NAV month-end YTD returns through June 30, 2026. Source: Fidelity Institutional.
