@alliestyx: Remember when every attractive man in the early 2000s looked like he was about to be deployed? From Hollywood heartthrobs to fashion advertising, the buzz cut became one of the era’s most recognizable masculine looks. But how much of that aesthetic was influenced by America’s wartime culture? A little fashion history, a little cultural psychology, and a question about whether we might see it happen again. #Y2K #2000sNostalgia #buzzcutseason #Masculinity #PopCulture
And if we are being honest, it also makes the white boys look urban!! Which in the early 2000 was a big deal.. a buzz cut ain’t nothing but a black man’s regular faded haircut and with that urban look also comes the expectation that they are edgy and rugged

Yes, this is why male beauty standards for men are much more feminine in Europe and Asia. Americans don’t realize how war oriented we are, especially within male aesthetics.

In the Balkans where I'm from, the buzzcut and camo has almost always been a sign of a fascist ideology

If you notice as well, after a country spends too long at war, the opposite becomes the ‘sexy’ default, long hair, mullets, mustaches. We can see this in both the 70’s and the 2010’s-2020’s at the tail ends of the Vietnam War and the Global War on Terror.

I always found interesting how you guys love the military/war aesthetic but never really suffered the consequences of war at least in the traditional sense it’s like you needed a remind you’re in war since it’s not so woven in every day life

Channing, Eminem, David Beckham, Justin Timberlake were all emulating a fade - all were into black culture and emulated black men in style and grooming. Similar to how the Kardashians emulated black female aesthetics in a couple years back.

Served in the army ‘03-‘10 as a medic with an infantry company in Iraq. I love how you touched on masculine aesthetics because I’ve thought much about the same for a long time! So thank you for this. My own two cents for what it’s worth. I remember prior to the war that clean cut was the masculine ideal, esp after WWII when soldiers needed to be shaved and clean to don gas masks. But when we invaded Afghanistan, I started noticing a lot of young white men sporting beards and longer hair strands. Also vets after they got out doing the same! After some time it occurred to me that they were all chasing the aesthetics of the special operations soldier (special forces) in Afghanistan. So the top layer of those who don’t know the military — yes, buzz cuts were the aesthetics. But if you knew inside baseball, you went for the shaggy operator. :) however these days I think most young men with a decent head on their shoulders would reject the military masculine aesthics mostly because they disagree with this war and the administration. They are seeing that masculinity in its current form has hit its nadir and we are actively witnessing its shadow expression — control, surveillance, lack of feeling, irrationality, lack of humanity. In any case great video!!!
