Jessica Chastain’s new horror movie, Other Mommy, is designed to make audiences jump out of their seats. But the real question is why people willingly pay money to feel frightened. The supernatural thriller follows Bela, an eight-year-old girl who begins seeing a creepy woman lurking in the shadows of her home. The disturbing part? The woman looks exactly like her own mother, played by Chastain. Director Rob Savage estimates that the film contains around 50 jump scares. Even the trailer reportedly frightened some moviegoers so badly that one audience member left the theater. But there is a reason these moments affect us so strongly. Psychologist Coltan Scrivner explains that jump scares trigger automatic reactions. Our eyes widen, our hearts race, and our bodies jolt before our brains have time to figure out whether there is any real danger. And even when we know a scare is coming, our bodies can still react. So why do we keep watching? Psychologist Pamela Rutledge says horror movies offer an emotional payoff. When the danger passes and the story reaches a resolution, the release can feel rewarding. Watching with friends can also make the experience feel safer while making every shared reaction more intense. But Other Mommy adds another layer of fear by turning a symbol of comfort into something threatening. Children are supposed to run to their mothers when they are frightened. What happens when the person who should make them feel safe is the one they cannot trust? Sometimes, the scariest monster is the one hiding in the place we feel safest. \#OtherMommy #JessicaChastain #HorrorMovies #MovieNews #Psychology
