She wrote that due to the buildup of putrefying gases, the Queen's body and coffin burst with a loud "crack" in the middle of the night. King James I's "Soft Cheese" Brain: Recorded in the official autopsy notes by his physicians, Sir Theodore de Mayerne and Dr. William Harvey (the guy who discovered blood circulation). They specifically wrote his brain was "softer than it ought to be... like soft cheese." King Henry II’s Jousting Autopsy: Documented by legendary French surgeon Ambroise Paré and anatomist Andreas Vesalius. They were given permission to behead four executed criminals and recreate the splinter injury on their skulls to figure out how to operate on the King. Queen Caroline of Ansbach: The gruesome details of her strangulated umbilical hernia and ruptured bowel are heavily documented in the memoirs of Lord Hervey, a close courtier, and covered extensively in modern historical works like Lucy Worsley's Courtiers. Pope Alexander VI (Rodrigo Borgia): The Master of Ceremonies at the Vatican, Johann Burchard, documented the Pope's rapid putrefaction. He wrote that the body swelled so massively from the summer heat and gases that it became wider than it was long, and they literally had to force and cram it into the coffin. King Charles I Head Reattachment: Documented by multiple witnesses to the execution. A surgeon (often cited as Thomas Trapham) was paid to sew the King's head back onto his body and embalm him so he could be buried in a lead coffin at Windsor.
