Both of these charts show a bullish fair value gap, but there's a difference in how price behaves after the gap forms. And that difference starts with the third candle. When studying fair value gaps (FVGs) in ICT or Smart Money Concepts trading, it's easy to focus entirely on whether an imbalance exists. But just because two setups both leave an FVG doesn't mean they're showing exactly the same price behaviour. Let's compare the two examples. FIRST, WHAT MAKES A BULLISH FVG? A bullish fair value gap is formed across three candles when the low of the third candle is above the high of the first. The space between those two prices is the FVG. Traders often monitor these areas because price may return to them before continuing in the original direction. However, not every fair value gap is revisited, and not every reaction produces a successful trade. That's where examining the individual candles becomes useful. EXAMPLE 1: LESS IMMEDIATE FOLLOW-THROUGH In the first chart, price moves higher and forms a bullish FVG. But look closely at the third candle. Although the gap exists, the third candle closes below the high of the second candle. Within the framework shown in the video, this suggests less immediate bullish follow-through. It doesn't mean the fair value gap is invalid. It simply means price hasn't shown the same degree of continuation that we see in the second example. As the illustration develops, price retraces back into the FVG before continuing higher. This is one possible outcome when momentum slows after the initial displacement. EXAMPLE 2: STRONGER CONTINUATION Now compare that with the second chart. Here, the third candle closes above the high of the second candle. Instead of showing hesitation around the previous candle's high, price continues higher. This is the additional detail being used to assess stronger bullish momentum. Within this approach, the formation may be considered a potential breakaway gap. The idea is that strong displacement and continued buying pressure could make an immediate return into the FVG less likely. But that's a possibility, not a guarantee. Price could still retrace into the gap later, even after producing a strong third candle. WHY DOES THIS MATTER? Because identifying an FVG and interpreting the price action around it are two different things. The basic three-candle formation tells us whether a fair value gap exists. The way the third candle closes can provide additional information about the strength of the move away from that area. A third candle closing above the second candle's high isn't required for a bullish FVG to exist. It's an extra characteristic that traders can evaluate. And before treating that characteristic as a reliable predictor, we'd need to test how often each type of formation actually leads to a retracement or continuation. The wider market structure, timeframe and surrounding price action still matter. THE TAKEAWAY Both examples leave bullish fair value gaps. The first shows less immediate follow-through, while the second shows stronger continuation beyond the previous candle's high. That difference can help us form a more informed hypothesis about how price might behave next. But neither formation tells us with certainty whether price will fill the gap or continue moving higher.
