To the world, Gloria Steinem was a feminist icon. To a specific student body of Gallaudet University in 1983, she was an ally who came to talk with them and to share tactics in what would eventually become the famous Deaf President Now protest. Gloria called sign language “seashells and feathers.” She said it was a democratic language that everyone could learn if they tried. She understood Deaf Gain long before we had a name for it. Watch until the end to see how Gloria felt when she returned home from Gallaudet. The loss she felt leaving the campus is truly profound to me. There is no place in the world like @gallaudetu and it gives me comfort to know that Gloria was able to spend a day in her life there, and that she not only helped plant the seeds for change there but that she herself was also forever changed by it. Rest in power, Gloria Steinem ✊🏽
