In fact, homicide is a leading cause of death during pregnancy and the postpartum period. That’s right. Women face a deadly threat that has nothing to do with an obstetric complication: violence, often at the hands of an intimate partner. We will see what unfolds in Matthew Farwell’s federal trial in Massachusetts. He has pleaded not guilty. But in the meantime, remember this: Women’s health is about more than pregnancy and childbirth. Women’s access to healthcare must include protecting them from violence.
