Ben & Jerry's co-founder urges fans to help save the brand from ice cream giant Magnum. Ben Cohen posted a video calling Ben & Jerry's owner, The Magnum Ice Cream Company, the "Magnum Monster." He says the brands of the world's largest ice cream company have "no soul," and Ben & Jerry's is next. Cohen says its owners fired the CEO for defending its activism, then gutted the board. He wants the brand sold to new investors, urges fans to boycott Magnum's other brands, not Ben & Jerry's, and to join FreeBenandJerrys.com. Ben & Jerry's has backed causes like racial justice since 1978. The founders opposed selling to Unilever, owner of Dove and Hellmann's, but shareholders accepted in 2000. Unilever legally granted an independent board authority over the mission. Tensions grew in 2021, when Ben & Jerry's announced it would stop selling in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. Cohen says its corporate owners blocked posts supporting Black History Month and a Gaza ceasefire. Unilever denies censoring the brand. In court, Ben & Jerry's alleges Unilever removed CEO Dave Stever in March 2025 over the brand's activism, months before spinning off its ice cream business as Magnum. Unilever says he resigned voluntarily. A longtime Unilever executive replaced him. Magnum removed board chair Anuradha Mittal, alleging misconduct, and she is suing for defamation. New term limits pushed out two more, and three left after not signing Magnum's code of conduct, leaving only its CEO and a Unilever appointee. Magnum says Ben & Jerry's is "not for sale." In August, a federal judge dismissed most of the former board members' lawsuit, but they can still challenge the new rules Magnum set for who can sit on the board. Know who you're funding.
