@shapingarrows5: My teenager wants to know…did/do you let your teen practice driving (in parking lots or somewhere) before they got their learners permit?? Poll in comments! If so- at what age (also what is the permit age in your state) and where? #teendrivers #drivingpractice
my brother drove before permit on back roads with my dad. I didn't and I wish I would have. my mom made me drive for the first time home from passing the permit test even though I really didn't want to. I panicked, she panicked, it was awful and tbh I'm lucky I didn't hit anything. it was all residential side streets and most homes in our town don't have garages or sometimes even driveways so it was all street parking both sides of the road.

So my grandfather owned a sand and gravel business and would take one of the trucks out to the field or parking lot and let me practice driving when I was 14 and after I learned how to control the truck he moved me up to the manual transmission and would park it on a hill and have me try to drive up the hill so I could learn how to use the clutch

Absolutely! Empty mall parking lots and school parking lots are best when snow covered!

Also first snowstorm we took them to an empty parking lot so they could practice slowing down, stopping and turning on snow.

Dirt roads and in our fields, made him pretend there were stop signs and all😁. He also drove the truck in granny gear while Dad threw out hay!

took my daughter to the cemetery lmao. everybody there is already dead. had nothing to worry about. all joking aside, it has slower speed limits, opportunity to learn to turn and can stop and go without blocking or holding up anybody

My parents did! We lived in a very rural area and they would let us drive some very vacant backroads. They also made us learn how to drive a manual. It definitely made me feel more comfortable being behind the wheel once I got my learners permit. Plus I don’t learn well from reading but I do from hands on stuff so I prob would have failed my learners permit test if I hadn’t been able to learn by driving before hand.

Elementary school parking lot. Practiced parallel parking. Driving in the lines, turning and staying in your lane. Tried to teach my son how to drive a stick but that never worked out. He’s a lefty and just could not get all the gears down. But he’s a good driver now.

always. Also , empty parking lots are ideal to let the kids learn how to drive in the ice and snow up here in Michigan

my kids move the cars around in the driveway starting around when they want to learn. 16 has been, but needs to get his grades up before we let him get his permit, and 14 just started showing an interest.

My teen drove our long country driveway with a turn around before having a permit. Before that, drove the side by side so had a pretty good feel for driving.

In my state you get the learners permit at 15 1/2 y/o. That means you can legally drive on roads/highways etc with an adult over 18 in the car with you. My parents and uncle let me practice with them before that age in their cars, starting at the very end of age 14. We were in empty parking lots or driveways (I practiced turning into the driveway and then parking in the garage). For context, we are eligible for a drivers license at 16, and no adult is required to be in the car with the driver once we pass and receive a license. So in general my state had low regs on it.
