as someone who worked at a cemetery, the grave probably settled , and they had to add dirt, but the least they could have done is tamp it down an added grass seed and straw

As an Ex grave digger what happen probably the grave settle and they had to put more dirt on there it might look like a fresh grave but that how grave digger does it and if it settle again they can rack it down and smooth.it out

Call the cemetery just to check. There are a couple of possibilities. First is that the ground settled and more dirt was needed. Second is that your granny is buried behind the headstone-as is the case at the graveyard where I will be buried. Third is that yes, the cemetery has goofed.

Happened to me I called to ask what happened to my moms grave and they said due to rain it was sinking so they had to put more dirt to cover up the holes
