@denaliedgeconsulting: Everybody wants higher wages. I get it. But a $3/hour raise for 15 full time employees adds $93,600 in annual wages before additional employer costs. Where does that money come from? Let's have the conversation. #EmployeeWages #BusinessEconomics #SmallBusinessOwner #LaborCosts #DenaliEdgeConsulting
This I understand the cost of living has gone up. Everything has gone up, but so has everything for us on the business overhead side of things . In fact we are making less money than we were a few years ago.

We’ve always gave raises & we paid them accordingly. Some got $1- some got $3-$4. If they are awesome employees- they are worth it. I don’t think employees realize their bills have went up, well so have ours! Sadly in 28 years we only have had 2 employees come ask for a raise- both wasn’t worth what we was already paying so it was that weight loss off our shoulders when they left!

I’ve been dealing with this and putting alot of thought into it. Thanks for approaching it, especially - it has to come from somewhere

The business owner can absolutely, now hear me out, increase their service rates to compensate for the cost of living. If you have 15 employees, you already can’t compete with the “man in a van” companies.

You NEED to have a structured pay raise schedule. Raises come with X amount of skill and/or responsibility. You’re capped at say X until you can let’s say- Drive, run a crew, operate equipment, understand printed plans, whatever it is. Most business owners DO NOT have anything like this in play. So when an employee asks for a raise, the owner feels like he got put in a corner and has no other option because he knows he needs that guy. You don’t get a raise just because you’ve stayed, or you’re always time. You can pay someone $60/hour, but they need to cover their own cost, they need to produce on tracked job costing to know where you stand internally. This conversation can turn into a rabbit hole. There is so much that goes into that “raise” that the average owner op is unfortunately clueless on.
