Gen Eds are a good introduction to college courses for college freshmen. They can definitely be cut back, but there are a lot of Gen Ed classes that aren’t pointless like public speaking or foreign language.

COLLEGE IS NOT JUST JOB TRAINING, IT IS TO MAKE YOU A WELL-ROUNDED AND EDUCATED INDIVIDUAL. Viewing college only as job preparedness is so sad man

As someone who worked in engineering for 40+ years: you couldn’t be more wrong. At least if you want to have a successful career.

Wrong - high school is to teach you how to be a learner, to show you what you like and what you don't like, to give you interests that may turn into careers. College is not a job training program - college is to make you a well rounded, well read well spoken individual. That is the purpose of a liberal arts education.

Not all highschools education bar is the same. I think the gen ed at a college is good for getting people on the same level starting off

I like how the answer is never make education more affordable it’s to lower educational requirements.

College isn’t designed to just prepare you for the workforce and a well rounded education is important for critical thinking and literacy skills.

Waisted my entire freshman year on classes I already took in highschool. It was a waste of money and my time.

I think that studying with people that are in different programs for the first year is important; also most high school students don’t retain the info they learned

This is fundamental just incorrect. Things like learning how to do technical writing is crucial in any career and college level course in science are just not realistic for every high school to do. Even electives which you can choose are helpful for any career even if it’s not the primary focus of said career.

I feel the same about high school. Like why are we spending all this time learning math science and reading. This is all stuff that should’ve been covered in middle school. For that matter, why are we covering all that stuff in middle school, I think we should’ve covered all that stuff by the time we finished elementary.

It sounds like you might be confusing education with job training. There are places that offer what you’re describing. But they don’t result in a bachelor’s degree which by definition includes the gen Eds.

Ehh I feel like higher education has the purpose of also creating an open minded public. College is a time when u are surrounded by people of all different backgrounds so so I think it’s fair to require ppl to diversity themselves academically and socially.

You missed the point of your education. College isn’t supposed to give you a specific set of skills, it’s not trade school for white collar jobs. College teaches you how to think about things differently, and each of those classes is intended to expose you to a new way of processing information. It’s less about the specific facts or skills and more about the process

It’s such a privilege take to think college students should be forced to take Gen Ed’s. “It’s for critical thinking” “it’s for developing a well rounded person” wrong. I’m poor and the only shot I have at making a living for myself is doing well in my technical courses.

I think students should have more free range on gen ed, like if im a computer engineering major I wouldn't mind taking a mechanical engineering class not relevant to my degree as a gen Ed...like how tf is studying history of medieval times going to help me? and why waste money on something I can read in my spare time?

then by this logic more time should be dedicated to gen ed in high school and there should be no electives because they can do those things in college.

Not every college or university has the same general education requirements. If you think you don't need to take those classes (you're wrong, but it's your money and education) then find a school that suits what you want out of an education. Or, if it's the expense that is your core objection to gen ed classes, go to community college for a year or two and transfer when you're done the gen ed classes.

This is mostly how it works in Canada. I do kind of wish we had a bit more gen ed, but it also worked without.
