An out of this world experience in California 😮👇🏻 📌 If you’re planning a Highway 395 road trip, definitely save this spot; share with your best adventure pals and follow @mindyonthemove as I explore even more hidden gems of the Eastern Sierra! Tucked along the shore of Crowley Lake, just south of Mammoth Lakes, lies one of the wildest natural wonders in the Eastern Sierra — the Crowley Columns. These alien-looking stone pillars were formed over 760,000 years ago when volcanic heat and water interacted after a massive eruption. Just down the road, you’ll also find Hot Creek Geologic Site, a geothermal area within the Long Valley Caldera — one of North America’s largest active supervolcanoes! 🌋 And scattered all around this region? Soakable hot springs with mountain views that feel straight out of a dream. ♨️ 🗺️ How to get to the Crowley Columns: 🚗 From Highway 395, turn onto Benton Crossing Road. ➡️ Drive approximately 15 miles and then turn right onto Owens Gorge Road. 🪧 Follow this road until you reach a dirt lot near coordinates 37.5899, -118.7044 — this is the trailhead parking area listed on AllTrails. 🥾 From there, it’s about a 2-mile hike each way (4 miles round trip) along the rest of the road, down to the lakeshore where the columns rise from the cliffs. 🚙 If you have a high-clearance 4WD vehicle, you can carefully continue down the rough dirt road closer to the lake — otherwise, it’s best to hike. We have a truck and we opted to hike! 📸 Once you reach the shore, you’ll see the surreal volcanic formations stretching along the water’s edge — it truly feels like another planet! ⚠️ Please don’t climb on the columns and respect any closure signs — they’re fragile and protected. ❓Have you ever seen a place this otherworldly in California? _____ #CaliforniaTravel #CaliforniaRoadTrip #Highway395 #EasternSierra #HiddenGems | California Hidden Gems | Unique Places in California | Highway 395 Road Trip | Things to do in the Eastern Sierra
