She is 24, an elite athlete from Australia, and she competes in Hyrox, one of the toughest fitness races in the world. In September, at a Hyrox race in Beijing, something went badly wrong in the middle of the race. Joanna kept racing anyway. She has now admitted that decision put other athletes at risk. Speaking exclusively to the BBC, she said she came into the race feeling fresh and really good. Then, about halfway through, she felt really bad. But in that moment, her only focus was on racing and winning. She did not think about those around her. Looking back, she says that was the wrong decision, and she is truly sorry for everyone she affected. She takes full responsibility for her choice to keep racing. She also admitted it was a hygiene issue for the other athletes. And she says the backlash online was brutal. She has stayed off social media for six or seven weeks, calling it a very mentally and emotionally taxing period. Joanna even thought about walking away from the sport completely.
