Two bullish liquidity sweeps. One buy gets stopped out, while the other reaches its take-profit target. So what's the difference between them? This is why looking at a liquidity sweep on its own can be misleading when trading price action. In the first example, price moves below a previous swing low, taking out the level where sell-side liquidity may be resting. For traders using ICT or Smart Money Concepts (SMC), that can look like the beginning of a potential bullish reversal. You see price sweep the low, you identify a possible long entry, and you place your stop loss underneath the area. But in this example, the buy gets stopped out. The interesting part is understanding what was missing from the analysis. Look at the key swing high associated with the low that price swept. Price hadn't broken that high. So although we'd identified a liquidity sweep, we didn't have the additional bullish market structure confirmation being looked for in this setup. That's an important distinction. Taking out sell-side liquidity doesn't automatically mean the market is ready to move higher. Price can sweep a previous low and continue falling, particularly when there isn't enough supporting evidence of a change in direction. Now compare that with the second example. Here, we can identify a sweep of the previous low alongside a bullish break of structure. Price has also broken the relevant swing high, providing another piece of information about the market's behaviour. That gives us a different context for considering a long position. Instead of relying entirely on the liquidity sweep, we're combining the sweep with information from market structure. The next step is planning the trade. We identify a potential buy entry, consider placing the stop loss below the relevant swing low, and assess where price could realistically move next. In this chart example, the projected trade is structured around a 1:3 risk-to-reward ratio, with price eventually reaching the marked target. But that doesn't mean every liquidity sweep accompanied by a break of structure will produce the same result. A bullish break of structure can fail, and price can still reverse against the trade. The important lesson is to understand which conditions support your trading idea and which conditions are missing. A liquidity sweep and a break of structure are two different pieces of information. The sweep identifies price taking out a previous level. The structural break provides additional evidence about the direction and behaviour of price. Combining them can help build a more complete trading hypothesis, but whether that combination offers a repeatable advantage needs to be evaluated across many trades. One winning example and one losing example aren't enough to establish that. Next time you're analysing a potential bullish liquidity sweep, pay attention to the relevant swing highs and the surrounding market structure before considering an entry.
