Watch Hill, Rhode Island, USA — Sarah Sarcone turned a family summer tradition into a handmade Halloween costume for her 2-year-old daughter: a miniature carousel. After their first visit to the Flying Horse Carousel, the toddler loved it and wanted to ride again. Their visits became a weekly tradition after trips to Misquamicut Beach. They also visited the Carousel Museum in Bristol, Connecticut. For Halloween, Sarcone offered two choices: a carousel or a birthday cake. Her daughter chose the carousel. Sarcone built it with cardboard, fabric, ribbon, plastic animals and craft supplies, spending about $50. She found materials at Revive Arts & Craft Supply in Middletown, Connecticut, garage sales and thrift stores. “The first time she went on it, I was so nervous she was going to cry and scream to get off!” Sarcone told PEOPLE. “But to my surprise, she loved it and kept asking to ride again and again.” “Since homemade costumes don’t come with instructions, I really had to think critically about how to bring my vision to life while making sure it would fit my daughter,” Sarcone said. “There were definitely moments when I said to myself, ‘Oops, I should have thought about this before I did this step!’ ” Some TikTok users questioned whether the toddler had chosen the outfit. One commenter wrote, “letting her be something she actually wants to be is always an option,” Sarcone responded that her daughter had selected it from two ideas. “One minute my daughter wants an orange lollipop, and the next she’s crying for a purple one,” she told PEOPLE, explaining why she limited the choices. Her daughter watched the project, asked to help and especially liked the plastic animals. When she sees the costume, she exclaims, “It’s wonderful!” Sarcone said she is excited for Halloween: “I’m looking forward to seeing my daughter wear the costume on Halloween and watching her enjoy something that holds such a special meaning,” PEOPLE published the story on October 30, 2026.
