Thank you for this. The system did not benefit all of us, even if you were white. Only the elites did get the benefit.

Sarah Basson :
I am a white woman who went to an Afrikaans primary school in 1990 and 1991, and the "Bible based" Christian National education system was misogynistic, racist and frankly bizarre. Girls had to clean the dining room while the boys were sent out to play. We had to kneel while the boys stood during prayer. We had to wear ankle length skirts because trousers were unbiblical. We had to sing volk liekies and watch videos about Creationism. We had to do survivalist training in preparation for the upcoming war. We had to hate both the swart gevaar and the rooi gevaar. We had to read our Bibles twice a day. We had to go to Dutch Reformed church services to hear about how women must be subservient to men, and how the Bible clearly says black people should only be servants. I could go on. And this was a government school!

Oh sana, earlier this week I was shocked when my Dad told me that you had to be baptised from specific churches like Methodist or Anglican and get English names if you wanted a job. Whn people think of Apartheid, they only think about the overt discrimination. I cannot imagine being arrested for publicly hanging out with my friend group.

my father ensured that my mother was completely dependent on him for everything. she was not allowed to work, she was not allowed to get a driver's licence, she was not allowed her own money or bank account. he did this so he could treat her and us children any way he liked. my mother never said it explicitly but I'm sure she was getting ready to leave him when she became pregnant with me. when he passed she was like a child herself, she had no life skills. but she will still say life was better under apartheid 😭🫩🙆‍♀️

I was born in 1970 and remember all this. I was nearly expelled from school for singing Nkosi Sekaleli and my friend was gay and had electro therapy to “cure” him and it destroyed his life

I was in Sebokeng during the early 1990's visiting friends in secret. Chaos broke loose when police enter the area and they started shoot at us. They didn't care that we were children, that we meant no harm. I will always remember just running. We were all just running. We didn't know where we were going. Adults would open doors and we hid in random houses. I was in my late teens. There was nothing good about apartheid. It was all horror and fear.
