The Quinn brothers were three young children—Richard, Mark and Jason Quinn—who were murdered in a sectarian petrol-bomb attack in Ballymoney, County Antrim, on 12 July 1998, at the height of the Drumcree crisis. * The boys were 10, 9 and 8 years old respectively. * Their family lived in the predominantly Protestant Carnany estate in Ballymoney. * In the early hours of 12 July, a petrol bomb was thrown through the window of their home. The house caught fire while the family slept. * Their older brother Lee survived because he was staying with his grandmother that night. * The attack was treated as sectarian, with contemporary reports saying the family was targeted because their mother was Catholic. * The attack was attributed to the UVF. Garfield Gilmour was the only person convicted in connection with the deaths; his murder convictions were later reduced to manslaughter on appeal. Why it matters to Garvaghy Road and Drumcree The murders happened during the Drumcree standoff, when the dispute over the Orange Order’s proposed march along the Garvaghy Road had produced enormous tension and violence. The deaths shocked people across Northern Ireland. Even within the Orange Order, there were calls for the Drumcree protest to end. Orange Order chaplain Rev William Bingham said that no road was worth a life, and the murders became a powerful symbol of how quickly the marching dispute had become entangled with sectarian violence.
