@histoire_obscur3: In 117 AD, the Roman Empire reached its greatest extent. Almost 1,900 years later, the city that once ruled the world still stands. What remains of that power? At that time, the empire covered around 5 million km², from Britannia to Mesopotamia, and held nearly 60 million people. The Mediterranean had become a Roman lake, linked by a network of paved roads stretching over 80,000 km. At the center of it all, Rome had around a million inhabitants. Forums, public baths, aqueducts, temples and the massive Colosseum stood side by side, and a column covered in carvings celebrated the victories won in Dacia. It was the largest city in the world. Today, Rome has about 2.8 million inhabitants, and its ruins draw millions of visitors every year. The Colosseum, the Forum and many other monuments are still standing. The empire is gone, but its legacy lives on: law, Latin languages, architecture and the roads that inspired so many cities. So what do you think: what survived the most from the Roman Empire? Its monuments or its legacy? Tell me in the comments! #italia #romanempire #roma #ancienthistory #worldhistory
