In the Quran, two Arabic words, Zawj (زوج) meaning spouse and Ruh (روح) meaning soul, share the same basic written shape when their dots are removed. This brings us to a beautiful connection in the Quran. Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala says: وَمِنْ آيَاتِهِ أَنْ خَلَقَ لَكُمْ مِنْ أَنْفُسِكُمْ أَزْوَاجًا "And among His signs is that He created for you spouses from among yourselves." (Quran 30:21) And in Surah An-Nisa (4:1), Allah reminds us that humanity was created from a single soul, and from it He created its mate. A marriage is about more than appearances, money, status, or family names. Those things can fade, but the bond between two people can grow deeper with time. Think of the couple who have spent fifty years together. Their looks have changed, their bodies have weakened, but their love remains. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Souls are like recruited soldiers. Those who recognise one another get along." (Sahih al-Bukhari 3336) So ask yourself: When the looks, money, and status disappear, will you still recognise the person beside you?
