I had GERD for over a decade and kept removing foods, sure that food was the cause. A low-acid diet helped, and I'd still start there. Reflux has more than one root contributor, so diet alone fell short of remission for me. What worked was addressing them together: • Nutrition: low-acid eating calms irritated tissue. In 20 people whose LPR hadn't improved on acid medication, 2 weeks of strict low-acid eating improved symptoms in 19. • Nervous system: in one trial, stress made people with GERD feel acid sooner and more intensely. Restriction kept my nervous system on high alert, and once I focused on it, my nutrition finally started working. • LES strength: the LES Lock is 1 to 5 minutes of diaphragmatic breathing after meals, with your rib cage expanding 360 degrees. In a Mayo Clinic trial, post-meal reflux events dropped from about 2.6 to under 0.4. • Alginate therapy: an alginate forms a raft on top of your stomach contents. The research is early, but in a small trial of people with LPR, symptoms improved about the same on an alginate as on omeprazole over 2 months. • Irritated tissue: throat burn is what pushed me to formulate @SequoiaSoothe. Slippery elm and DGL soothe the throat and esophagus, and zinc carnosine and L-glutamine support healthy tissue in the esophagus and gut. You can find it on my TikTok Shop. My free Reflux Vagus Nerve webinar is linked in my bio. 📚 Koufman 2011, Ann Otol Rhinol Laryngol, prospective study, n=20 PPI-resistant LPR, 19 improved on a low-acid diet (nothing below pH 5), PMID 21675582. Fass et al., 2008, Gastroenterology, randomized crossover trial, n=56, acute stress made GERD patients feel acid sooner and more intensely, PMID 18206149. Halland et al., 2021, Am J Gastroenterol, randomized trial, n=33, post-meal reflux events 2.60 to 0.36 with diaphragmatic breathing vs observation, PMID 33009052. Pizzorni et al., 2022, Eur Arch Otorhinolaryngol, randomized trial, n=50 LPR (stopped early), magnesium alginate vs omeprazole 20 mg for 2 months, both improved with no significant difference, PMID 35032204. Tseng et al., 2018, Laryngoscope, double-blind placebo-controlled trial, n=80, alginate did not beat placebo, PMID 29399800. #refluxtok #GERD #nervoussystem #refluxremission #refluxdietitian
